Oliva Wilde Project Upate

Olivia Wilde collage

Introduction:

The goal of this project is to practice topology and to learn the correct use of edge loops.

Some stats the model is based off.

Name: Olivia Wilde
Height: 5′ 7½” (1.71 m)
Measurements: 34-23-33
Hair Color : Blond
Eye Color: Green

For the ones that might not know her, she is the actress that plays Thirteen in the series “House” that airs on Fox.

Planning:

Well to start thing right I went and search for pictures of Olivia Wilde, after a few hours I had about one hundred high res pictures in various poses, from closeups to full body shots. The hard part is finding usefull reference shots that are in perfect profile. I think I found the “best” pictures to use as reference have a look below.

Modeling:

In blender I add to planes that intercect each other and then I added the above images using the UV editor. The object of this is to use the imege to rotoscope technique.

First Step in the Olivia Project

At first I had a few failed attempts so I had to do some research on how to model the head. That is how I came across an excellent discussion on topology in CGtalk and an excellent tutorial on how to plan edge loops that can be found in 3dTotal. With this new found knowledge I was now able to start in the right direction.

To start I added a plane in the front view, then I vertically divided the plane in two. Then I eliminated one of the half and added a Mirror modifier. Then I picked a vertex and deleted it, that left me with three vertexes, from then I started adding more vertexes (using ctrl+click) to form the edge loops. Then I added a Subsurf modifier to smooth out the edge loops. See the images below to get an idea on the edge loops.

Note: The edge loops are from a more advance model.

To further guide me I implemented the use of the Grease Pencil tool to draw the edge loops that are needed to complete the mesh. Using the guides I started to connect the vertexes to create faces and started to fill the face. Once I had the overall shape of the face I started to add more loops to add the details. Once the face took shape I had to add the eyes, even thought the eye seems simple to model is still a good idea to have of how to model a good looking eye so I turn to 3dTotal and found a great tutorial on Modeling an eye. See below for the results on the eye.

As a note the texture color for the eye is off, from the reference pictures I had it look like she had blue eyes but it turns out she has green eyes.

The ear was imported into the blend from an old model that I have, I never finish it so one of these days I will finish it and post it. Since This was from an old model the ear was not quite correct, so I had to size and reshape the ear. Once the ear was the correct size the anatomy of it was completely off so I had to use the current model as a template for the new ear. I still don’t think it is 100 percent correct but it is as close as my current skill can permit.

This all being said the current completion for the project is at about 45 percent completion. The mesh, material, lighting and background are  not complete, I will be creating new posts for this project with up to date progress.
